‘This Thanksgiving…’ by Fauzia Rafique

Discover me
like Columbus
discovered America

Disregard and overlook
my brand new citizenship card,
esl abilities, my bridging
capabilities. There still are
some Indians (and many
Pakistanis) in me– spoiling
for education, assimilation,
in short, civilization.

Discover me
like Columbus
discovered America

Ignore or obliterate
my multicultured clothes,
urban unriches, my
discomforting art. There still is
a writer (even when
brown) in me– needing
cliches, creative writing courses,
in short, author-ization.

Discover me
like Columbus
discovered America

Exorcise and enslave
my mind, that independent
wave dashing beyond your glitter, an
uncontrolled tongue. There still is
a rebel (even if
feminine) in me– requiring
guidance, tall historic lies,
in short, indoctrination.

Discover me
like Columbus
discovered America

‘Internal Dialogue’ a song by Mariam Zohra

INTERNAL DIALOGUE

got me thinking you know
“Yeah!” to people.
to people.
money
necessarily
for its not in money
almost put me to shame
then i thought:
in what way am i lacking?
for it’s not in
money
necessarily,
for people are falling through the cracks even with money!
and the more mediums you can use to express that internal dialogue – the better.

how do i really do it!
you know how i do it?
i do it by being able to strum a guitar-
once a day –
sing when i’m walking down the street,
in the shower
you know, observe nature.
think poetics and philosophy,
and that’s what keeps me going!
and that’s what keeps me going!

got me thinking you know:
it’s the… the pronunciation of internal dialogue;
and the more mediums you can use to express that internal dialogue:
the better.
and the more mediums you can use to express that internal dialogue:
the better.
you know observe nature.
got me thinking you know:
yeah!
sing when i’m walking down the street…
in the shower.
got me thinking you know:
yeah!
“the pronunciation of internal dialogue”
yeah!

money
necessarily;
for its not in
money…
…for people are falling through the cracks
even with money.

but it’s…
how do i really do it?
you know how i do it?
money –
necessarily…
for it’s not in… money;
for people are falling through the cracks even with money…

but it’s…
how do i really do it!
you know how i do it?
“the pronuciation of internal dialogue”
got me thinking you know:
yeah!
and its –
how do i really do it?
you know how i really do it?
got me thinking… you know…
yeah!
the pronunciation of internal dialogue…

‘Imbecile In Conversation With a God’ by Sana Janjua

She called me Imbecile three times:

(You are an Imbecile! You are an Imbecile! You are an Imbecile!)

Furled my innocence to throw out of the window,
tore my garb off my body
and cut a thousand holed tent out of it,
then hung it on the bamboo for her crows to rest in;

She threw sewage waste on my face to hide my presence,
put burning coal on my palms to deplete my sins,
lashed and whipped me hundred times to do me good;

She exposed my breasts for loafers to feed at,
shucked my clitoris and stuffed it with hessian of poison,
pecked at my organs with needles soaked in piss-dung;

She led me to believe in her
Supreme Beneficence.

But I survived.
I survived to feed her crows.
.

Sana Janjua writes and performs monologues engaging audiences into witnessing the internal states of people who undergo trauma, symptoms of PTSD, and ongoing conflict with dreams, and childhood(s).
